Dealing with common transmission problems
Money doesn’t grow on trees, which is why millions of Americans drive for Uber, drive for Lyft and/or drive for DoorDash. It’s an amazing business model: Simply sign-into an app, then drive off and provide either transportation and/or meal delivery for someone (hopefully) willing to tip. But transmission problems may sideline your side-hustle and income. So let’s figure out what Street Smart Transmission can do to help.
First-things First: How bad is the problem?
The condition and level of your automatic transmission fluid, can often cause and/or tell you a lot more about your transmission problems. For example, to little or too much ATF can cause a number of common transmission problems including:
- Harsh shifts
- Failure to engage gears
- Smoke coming from the transmission
The first thing you need to do is check the level of transmission fluid in the vehicle. To do this, open the hood and with the vehicle running, remove the transmission fluid dipstick and wipe it with a clean rag. Then replace the transmission fluid dipstick and remove it again to recheck the level. For more detailed instructions on how to do this, please refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
One of the most common Uber Eats car requirements/DoorDash car requirements is to have a vehicle that actually runs. If you have determined that the transmission has overheated, then you will need to figure out why it happened. Here are some of the most common causes of Transmission overheating:
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Dirty/clogged transmission filter
- Engine overheating
- Severe use in stop and go traffic, excessively hot regions for the mountains
- Doing a burnout
- Extremely aggressive driving
- Failure of internal transmission parts
Without mechanical expertise, it will be difficult to determine how bad your transmission problems really are. If the transmission fluid is extremely low, refilling it to the correct level may allow you to continue driving. Servicing/changing the transmission fluid may also return full or partial functionality. If neither of these two things solve your problem, or there are accompanying OBDII Diagnostic Trouble Codes | DTC / error codes/a check engine light, then you may need to seek the help of a mechanic.
What are your options?
Solution A: Buy a Used Transmission
Buying a used transmission from the local salvage yard might seem like the most economical solution at first. But with no way to verify the condition of the internal components, you may literally be buying someone else’s transmission problems. And that junkyard warranty may not cover labor charges if something goes wrong with the first used transmission.
Solution B: Buy a Rebuilt Transmission
Next up the ladder of logic, would be a rebuilt transmission. In this scenario, a mechanic would take your existing gearbox and install a bunch of factory spec transmission parts. When you compare this with a used transmission, it does seem like the better choice. However returning the transmission back to stock will cause all of the original factory design flaws to return in the future. And that rebuilt transmission warranty is usually only good at the shop that built the transmission. So if you have transmission problem what your out of town, that warranty will do you absolutely no good.
Solution C: Buy a Remanufactured Transmission
The most viable solution to all of your transmission problems, is to get a remanufactured transmission from a reputable supplier. They use are often upgraded beyond OE specs to extend their service life. And many will come with a nationwide warranty, that will provide you with coverage no matter where you travel.
