Volkswagen 09G Valve Body Problems & Solutions

The Volkswagen 09G transmission was actually designed by the Japanese firm Aisin Warner, then adapted to fit VW’s powertrain parameters. It’s most commonly found in the following models:

•Volkswagen Jetta
•Volkswagen Beetle
•Volkswagen Passat
•Volkswagen Rabbit

The internal configuration of the VW 09G varies, depending on the engine that it’s paired with. Some of these changes include the number of clutch discs, the number of planetary gears, the fluid pressure, and the size of the torque convertor. Because of its Lepelletier planetary design, this compact transmission is able to provide 6 forward gears, using only 5 shifting elements. When it was introduced, this gearbox was considered state-of-the-art. However, long term reliability soon became an issue, especially with the valve body. However, it’s not uncommon to experience problems due to poor quality control, or overlooked problems with the core on which the reman valve body is based.

Street Smart Transmission on the other hand, doesn’t do small batches. The engineers in our R&D department had to first develop ways to correct the inherent design flaws that were causing early 09G solenoid failure and overheating. So each SST reman 09G valve body is modified to improve fluid pressure control, and each solenoid is bench tested prior to installation. The valves and bores get upgraded as well, and multiple quality inspections are performed throughout the build.
