RE5R05A History and Radiator Issue:
The 5R05, also called RE5R05A (Nissan part) or JR507E/JR509E (Jatco part), is a Jatco and Nissan Motors 5-speed automatic transmission, released in 2002, used in rear wheel drive or 4X4 vehicles with longitudinal engines.
Numerous Nissan vehicles equipped with the RE5R05A 5-speed automatic transmission as part of their powertrains have experienced premature transmission failure due to contamination of transmission fluid with engine coolant. The fluid contamination occurs due to failure of the transmission fluid cooler located within the radiator.
Our Recent Reviews
We let our reviews speak for us.
Nissan RE5R05A Valve Body Problems & Solutions
First introduced in 2002, the Nissan RE5R05A transmission is a 5-speed automatic gearbox that was designed in conjunction with Nissan’s transmission subsidiary Jatco, and can carry the alternate part numbers 5R05, JR507E/JR509E. It was engineered for use in rear-wheel and 4-wheel drive vehicles, including the following:
•2005–2012 Nissan Pathfinder
•2003–2012 Nissan Titan
•2005–2012 Nissan Xterra
•2005–2012 Nissan Frontier
•2004–2012 Nissan Armada
•2003–2009 Infiniti G35
The Nissan RE5R05A valve body can be fairly reliable, if it’s properly maintained. However, a design flaw in the transmission cooling system can raise serious questions about the Nissan RE5R05A reliability and cause the valve body to fail prematurely.
Premature Nissan RE5R05A Valve Body Failure
Due to a serious oversight, the radiator that was used in conjunction with the RE5R05A transmission had a weak transmission cooling chamber that would crack and allow antifreeze to leak into the transmission fluid. When this happened, the glycol and water in the antifreeze would do serious damage to the entire transmission. Not to mention causing a host of RE5R05A valve body problems.
Common Problems with the RE5R05A Nissan Valve Body
When contamination occurs on the Nissan RE5R05A transmission, friction material from the torque converter and clutches can mix with the anti-freeze and transmission fluid to form a gel-like substance. As it moves through the transmission, it can wreak havoc on internal components such as the valve body. This mixture of glycol/water and transmission fluid are highly conductive, so issues with electrical devices are quite common.
TCM Failure
Contaminated transmission fluid can leach into the RE5R05A TCM, causing the electrical current to arc between the pins. When this happens, numerous problems and error codes can be triggered, including malfunctioning solenoids (like the front brake solenoid / 4-5 slipping) and pressure switches.
Solenoid Failure
Once the solenoids are forced to work with the contaminated transmission fluid, it’s unlikely that they will ever function correctly again. The Nissan RE5R05A solenoids are delicate little devices, and the gel-like contaminated ATF can severely damage the plunger mechanism and wiring. This can cause slipping between the gears, delayed shifts, erratic shifting, and/or a complete failure to engage forward or reverse gears.
The Street Smart Transmission Difference
If you want to solve all of your valve body related issues, and have the security of a 3 Year/No Hassle Warranty, then you need to consider a remanufactured RE5R05A valve body from Street Smart Transmission. Each one is built in a state of the art factory, by Certified valve body technicians. And our strict quality control process ensures that each valve body that we ship, will exceed the manufacturer’s specifications using a road simulation tester.
How It’s Done
•Using specialized equipment, each valve body is inspected for warping, cracks, and tensile strength prior to the build
•Every valve, piston, spring and bore is tested to ensure that it conforms to OE specifications
•Wear components like valve body gaskets are replaced
•7 solenoids get bench tested prior to it leaving
•Pressure switch and speed sensors are tested
•The remanufactured TCM is pre-programmed to each customers specific VIN number code, ensuring proper functionality right out of the box.
Once finished, every remanufactured RE5R05A valve body is thoroughly bench tested using a Superflow AXILINE Valve Body Tester. This state of the art machine is able to simulate actual road conditions, which allows the shift points and functionality to be fine-tuned prior to shipment.
So if you’re looking for a remanufactured RE5R05A valve body that is engineered to exceed both OE specifications and customer expectations, then give us a call or fill out the form above.
