Our Acadia 6T75E Series Transmission Updates and Upgrades

GMC Acadia Transmission Problems & Solutions

The GMC Acadia was designed to be a premium alternative to the typical 3-row family crossover. As such, they gave it an upscale cabin, with lots of quality materials, and fancy features. The GMC Acadia Denali took the fancy-ness a step further, by adding a bespoke plastic-chrome exterior package, pearl paints, and even nicer interior accouterments.

Under the hood, both "Grades" of GMC Acadia got a powerful 3.6L V6 engine, and a new 6-speed automatic that made momentum feel effortless. However, that smooth shifting gearbox has habit of self-destructing rather early in its life-cycle, forcing many owners to resort to a remanufactured GMC Acadia transmission.

Common Problems with the Acadia 6T75E Transmission

1) Overheating

One of the most common GMC Acadia transmission problems is overheating. This happens when the moving parts inside the transmission are creating more friction heat than the ATF can remove. The most common cause of this condition is towing heavy loads, driving in stop/go traffic, or on mountain roads where the transmission has to shift a lot. Overfilling the transmission with too much ATF can also cause 6T75E transmission overheating, which can lead to ruptured seals, and damaged torque converters, valve bodies, bands, and clutches. An auxiliary transmission cooler can do a lot to help keep the temperature down.

2) Failed wave plates

Another common issue with the GMC Acadia 6T75E transmission is broken wave plates. These metal disks help to lock gears together during a shift. If they break, the metal fragments will get hurled through the gearbox, causing catastrophic damage to other internal components. There isn't a lot that you can do to prevent this problem, but a remanufactured GMC Acadia transmission can ensure that it won't happen again.

3) Bad Shift Solenoid

When a gear change is required, the computer tells a little spring-loaded plunger in the valve body to move and direct pressurized ATF into the appropriate channel. There's one of these solenoids for each gear, and it's activated by sending current through the coil of wire that's wrapped around it. The problem is, that coil of wire can short out, or excessive vibration can shake it loose, causing the solenoid to fail. They aren't terribly expensive to buy, but the labor to replace a GMC Acadia transmission solenoid won't be cheap.

How to Solve Acadia Transmission Problems

Option A: Buy a Used Acadia transmission

The fastest solution to a non-working transmission is to go buy a used GMC Acadia 6T75E transmission from a junkyard. They're relatively affordable, and most used GMC Acadia transmissions will come with a 30-90 day warranty. However, you don't know the condition of the transmission before the vehicle it's in, wound up in the junkyard. So it may develop the exact same problem that you're trying to fix. Plus that warranty only covers the transmission, not the labor charges that you'll have to pay to install the replacement.

Option B: Buy a Rebuilt Acadia transmission

Your next option is to buy a rebuilt GMC Acadia 6T75E transmission. These feature lots of new parts, seals, and they typically come with a 1-2 year warranty. The overall durability and functionality of a rebuilt 6T75E transmission, largely depends on the skill of the mechanic rebuilding it. However, if you go to one of those franchise shops, it'll be hard to judge the experience level of their tech's. And, that warranty may only be useful if you happen to break down near one of their shops.

Option C: Buy a Remanufactured Acadia transmission

Short of buying a whole new vehicle, a remanufactured GMC Acadia 6T75E transmission is your  next best option. Every Street Smart Transmission is thoroughly remanufactured, then dyno tested prior to shipment to ensure proper functionality and quality. It also receives a transferable nationwide 3-Year/Unlimited Mile Warranty that covers both the transmission and labor should something go wrong.

The remanufactured 6T75E transmission comes with a remanufactured valve body, torque converter, and transmission pump. In addition, many components like the bushings, clutch clearances, and pump rotor, are upgraded over the stock specification to avoid problems common to this gearbox.

The GMC Acadia is a great family vehicle, with a reliable engine, and surprisingly good build quality. So don't take chances with your safety and fix your broken drivetrain once and for all, with a remanufactured 6T75E transmission from Street Smart Transmission.
