Remanufactured Dodge B2500 Transmissions

Designed for use in everything from recreational vehicles to church buses, the Dodge B2500 is a heavy duty Dodge van that has been on the road since the 1970s. Sometimes called the Dodge Ram Van, this boxonwheels is able to handle an incredible amount of weight with decent reliability. The most common Dodge B2500 transmissions are the 46RFE transmission and the 545RFE transmission. But unfortunately, some transmission problems can require the installation of a remanufactured Dodge B2500 transmission to keep the work going. So let’s find out if that’s the best option for you.

Dodge B2500 46RFE Transmission Problems

Premature forward clutch failure

Problem – Its not uncommon to experience premature forward clutch failure, which can prevent the vehicle being driven.

Solution – This can be caused by a number of issues including valve body failure, a worn stator bushing, a failed forward clutch piston seal, a failed forward drum assembly, the use of power programmers/chips to increase engine output, which can overwhelm a number of internal components

Dodge B2500 545RFE Transmission Problems

Delayed and/or harsh 3-4 or 4-5 shifts

Problem – Owners may experience an unusually delayed or harsh 3-4 or 4-5 gear change, where the transmission doesnt seem to want to go into that particular gear.

Solution  This issue is related to valve body problems where the material used to make one of the checkballs has broken down to the point that fluid is able to get past and engage the underdrive clutch during those shifts. An upgraded #2 checkball will be needed to solve the issue.

Solenoid Pack: With no transmission bands, the electronically controlled 545RFE relies on a solenoid switch pack to direct fluid to the correct clutch pack for gear engagement. If the solenoid pack goes bad, youll experience no gear engagement, engine stalling, limp mode, or failure to engage overdrive.

Slipping and Delayed Gear Engagement: The transmission pump has a little valve mechanism inside it, which controls the fluid pressure being transferred from the torque converter. If it goes bad, youll have delayed gear engagement, transmission/torque converter overheating, stalling, slipping, and reduced fuel economy.

How to Solve Dodge B2500 Transmission Problems

Solution A: Buy a Used Dodge B2500 Transmission

Going to the local junkyard and picking up a used Dodge B2500 transmission might seem like the cheapest and fastest option. But you need to consider the fact that you don’t know what the actual shape of the internal components are. It could very well be on the verge of transmission problems of its own, which would leave you in the exact same predicament that you’re in now. And that 30 – 90 day junkyard warranty probably won’t cover labor charges to install the replacement transmission if something goes wrong.

Solution B: Buy a Rebuilt Dodge B2500 Transmission

Getting a rebuilt Dodge B2500 transmission would probably seem like a better idea. However, a lot of mechanics and transmission shops will only rebuild your Dodge B2500 transmission back to its original factory specifications. Which means that all of those factory design flaws are still going to be inplay. And that rebuilt transmission warranty might only be good at certain shops, which could do you no good if you have transmission problems while you’re traveling.

Solution C: Buy a Remanufactured Dodge B2500 Transmission

If you want to get the most service life out of your little luxury SUV as possible, then you really should consider a remanufactured Dodge B2500 transmission from Street Smart Transmission. Each one is completely disassembled and re-remanufactured, so nothing is left to chance. Theyre also modified to correct the factory design flaws, which will greatly extend the service life. Plus, you get a 3-Year/Unlimited Mile Nationwide Warranty. This will cover parts and labor charges at any licensed repair shop in the Continental United States, giving you a lot more flexibility and coverage.
