Our 6L80 / 6L90 Updates and Upgrades

► Fully remanufactured valve body, with complete system correction and recalibration kit, improves pressure control and shift quality.
► Fluid pump is fully detailed with resurfaced pump rotor mating surfaces and machined pump body mating surfaces to maintain correct fluid pressures.
► Late style stator support shaft with updated seal rings used exclusively in all units to eliminate seal leakage.
► Upgraded 38-element low sprag installed in all units to increase holding capacity.
► Fully remanufactured torque converter is tested for leaks, lockup, concentricity, and balance. Upgrades exceed OE requirements and eliminate the possibility of front seal leaks, premature bushing wear, and vibration.
► Bushings and machined surfaces polished to a mirror-like OE finish of 15 RA or less.
► All new bushings installed in key locations to improve internal fluid flow control and fluid pressures.
► Complete system correction and recalibration kit installed to address several OE flaws. Modifications include updates to servos, the PR system, and valve body accumulators.
► Complete road simulation using a dynamometer testing program called C.A.R.S. (Computer Aided Road Simulation). Every transmission is cold and hot tested before shipment.

6L80 / 6L90 Vehicle Applications

How Many Variations of the 6L80 / 6L90?

There are many different variations (so we have over 60 different part numbers!). Each one for a different engine size (bellhousing) and varying electronic and solenoid systems for different years.

Only certain models will interchange with others, which is why we ask for your 17-digit VIN# when you order so we are 100% sure it is the matching unit for your vehicle!

Remanufactured 6L80 vs. Rebuilt or Used

Reman 6L80 vs. Rebuilt 6L90?
Both are good options but the best option for you depends on the transmission problem, the year, make and model of vehicle, the mileage and the vehicle value. What kind of warranty coverage are you looking for? Remanufactured transmissions carry a longer, 3 year, nationwide warranty with additional upgrades while a rebuilt unit generally carries up to a 1 or 2 year warranty and upgrades vary from shop to shop.
Reman 6L80 vs. Used 6L80?
Buying a used 6L80 transmission may save you money. However, if the unit does not work properly after installed, you will more than likely have to pay the labor again for removal and reinstall of the transmission PLUS the freight to ship the transmission back to the salvage yard. The additional cost may be higher than installing a reman or rebuilt transmission–not to mention the extra downtime. Warranties for a used transmission is only 30 days, 60 days, 90 days or 6 months. Used transmissions, since there is no way to know how many miles are on them, may fail at any time.

6L80 / 6L90 History

The 6L80 (and similar 6L90) was introduced in late 2005 and is a fully automatic, six-speed, clutch-to-clutch, rearwheel drive, electronic-controlled transmission. The transmission consists primarily of a four-element torque converter, an integral fluid pump and converter housing, a single and double planetary gear set, friction and mechanical clutch assemblies, and a hydraulic pressurization and control system. The four-element torque converter contains a pump, a turbine, a pressure plate splined to the turbine, and a stator assembly.

The torque converter acts as a fluid coupling to smoothly transmit power from the engine to the transmission. It also hydraulically provides additional torque multiplication when required. The pressure plate, when applied, provides a mechanical “direct drive” coupling of the engine to the transmission. The planetary gear sets provide the six forward gear ratios and reverse. Changing gear ratios is fully automatic and is accomplished through the use of a Transmission Control Module (TCM) located inside the transmission. The TCM receives and monitors various electronic sensor inputs and uses this information to shift the transmission at the optimum time. It features clutch to clutch shifting, eliminating the one-way clutches used on older transmission designs.
