Our 5R55 Updates and Upgrades

► The solenoid pack, commonly responsible for electrical shift related issues in this family, has been completely remanufactured in-house, including disassembly, cleaning, and testing independently.
► To prevent overdrive planet failure due to lack of lubrication and to increase durability, the planets have been rebuilt and TIG welded.
► To combat erratic shifting due to high wear, the servo and servo pin have been realigned and modified using in-house custom tooling and bushings.
► The completely remanufactured pump, with a new pump cover bushing machined in place and a new flow control valve, has been assembled in a custom alignment fixture to provide consistent internal pressures, improved lubrication, and eliminate noise, slipping, and delayed engagement.
► To prevent torque converter vibration and damage, we’re provided, installed, and aligned a flex plate adapter.
► The pump also features a custom-spec front stator bushing and a new rear bushing to better support the input shaft and improve lubrication control.
► Fully tested on our custom-built, custom-programmed dynamometers with Synthetec ATF, the 5R55 is cold-, hot-, load-, and road-tested.
► Complete road simulation testing using a proprietary dynamometer testing program called CARS (Computer-Aided Road Simulation). Every transmission is cold- and hot-tested while using a custom-blended fully synthetic ATF and filtration system.

5R55 Vehicle Applications

How Many Variations of the 6L80 / 6L90?

There are many different variations (so we have over 60 different part numbers!). Each one for a different engine size (bellhousing) and varying electronic and solenoid systems for different years.

Only certain models will interchange with others, which is why we ask for your 17-digit VIN# when you order so we are 100% sure it is the matching unit for your vehicle!

Remanufactured 5R55S vs. Rebuilt or Used

Reman 5R55S vs. Rebuilt 5R55S?
Both are good options but the best option for you depends on the transmission problem, the year, make and model of vehicle, the mileage and the vehicle value. What kind of warranty coverage are you looking for? Remanufactured transmissions carry a longer, 3 year, nationwide warranty with additional upgrades while a rebuilt unit generally carries up to a 1 or 2 year warranty and upgrades vary from shop to shop.
Reman 5R55S vs. Used 5R55S?
Buying a used 6L80 transmission may save you money. However, if the unit does not work properly after installed, you will more than likely have to pay the labor again for removal and reinstall of the transmission PLUS the freight to ship the transmission back to the salvage yard. The additional cost may be higher than installing a reman or rebuilt transmission–not to mention the extra downtime. Warranties for a used transmission is only 30 days, 60 days, 90 days or 6 months. Used transmissions, since there is no way to know how many miles are on them, may fail at any time.

5R55 Series History

The 5R55E, though mechanically similar to the 4-speed 4R55E, was a new breed of electronically controlled automatic transmission with an additional forward gear. It was the first 5-speed automatic transmission to be employed by an American automaker. The 5R55E featured more precise computer controls (necessary to accommodate the additional forward gear) and introduced with a sophisticated friction-to-friction shift ability.

Following the original “E” series of the transmission introduced in the 1997 model year, other variants of the 5R55 transmission appeared. All variants are fundamentally similar to each other in design but differ in things such as specialized controls, gear ratios, or other elements based on the needs of the specific application the transmission is intended for. The first of these variants, the 5R55N, appeared in the Jaguar S-Type and Lincoln LS luxury sedans, and later in the 2002 Ford Thunderbird. The 2003 Thunderbird switched to the 5R55S and featured the option of Ford’s SelectShift, which allowed drivers to mimic shifting like a manual transmission without a clutch. The 5R55S, minus the SelectShift feature, was used in models of the Ford Mustang from 2005 until 2010.

The 5R55W appeared in models of the Ford Explorer and Ford Ranger from 11.13.2000 until 03/04/2002(Explorer) and 2011(Ranger). Mostly specific difference between 5R55W (wide shift) and 5R55S (synchronic shift) is a different overdrive planet gear ratio. Entry-level models of the 2008 Ford FG Falcon were the newest recipients of the 5R55 transmission.
